On the morning of November 11th, students from St. Ignatius High School’s STEM Studies and Welding & Non-Destructive Testing programs had a unique educational opportunity to engage directly with industry professionals at a significant local site—the Hawksworth Bridge. Built in 1949, this architectural landmark recently underwent its most substantial renovations, completed in 2024.

Mrs. Ramy Chia, a respected civil engineer and industry partner, led an enlightening presentation detailing the theoretical and practical aspects of the bridge’s repairs and improvements. This session marked the first time STEM students had the chance to observe the bridge’s latest enhancements firsthand, a momentous occasion for both the students and the school.

The Hawksworth Bridge is pivotal in the community as a physical structure and a symbol of enduring engineering prowess. With the renovations nearly complete, the bridge will be inaugurated by key government officials and contractors, celebrating a successful restoration that promises to benefit the community for years.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Chief Engineer at MIDH for collaborating on this educational venture. Engagements like these are crucial in bridging the gap between classroom theory and real-world application, providing students with invaluable insights into the complexities of civil engineering and structural integrity.

St. Ignatius High School is proud to facilitate such interactions, recognizing their importance in preparing students for future careers in STEM fields.
